August 14, 1988
34 years ago today a disturbing the peace call was dispatched and a young officer, Matt Faber (to my right in the photo), tragically and senselessly lost his life during the call. Matt, my friend and academy classmate, followed the uncooperative suspect into his home…where the suspect grabbed a shotgun positioned near the door..
Faber, having nowhere to go, turned and retreated towards the outdoors. The suspect shot Faber in the back as he moved..
Faber fell, critically wounded, and was transported to Wishard Hospital (Eskanazi) soon afterwards.
I spent the next 12+ hours at the hospital consoling Matt’s wife Jan and members of both families. There were hundreds of officers that assembled outside. All waiting and praying for Matt to survive. He did survive that night and he fought valiantly over the next couple of weeks while his family and I continued to visit, speak with him (he was unconscious), hold his hand, and prayed…
before he was eventually called by God..
I’ve seen many tragedies, I have held many hands, hugged many friends and colleagues over the years. I know what it’s like to lead public servants and I vow to always support our emergency response professionals as your next mayor. There should be no doubt amongst those that have sworn an oath to protect and serve the City of Greenfield be they police officers, firefighters, medics, or dispatchers that I will have your back. I too swore that oath for my country as well as my community and I have never taken that oath lightly.
Our public servants must have leadership that will always support them and that leadership starts at the top. Placing your trust in me will guarantee that your city employees will be supported and encouraged to be the best of the best at all times.
Continue to Rest In Peace brother Faber…
