Getting to Know Me - Family

Like several mayors before me I was not born here in Hancock County nor did I grow up in Greenfield. However, back in my era, the Baby Boomers era, our beliefs, life styles, and work ethics were those that were shared by millions of Hoosiers.

I was born in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana in 1964. The #2 son of James and Patricia Carver. Both of my parents’ grand parents immigrated here from Europe. My father’s from Germany and my mother’s from Italy. We grew up eating well! You’ll find out later that I’m a foodie and grew up watching a lot of public television cooking shows with my mom.

Similar to many Indiana fathers in the 60’s and 70’s my father worked in a factory – the National Automatic Tool Company or NATCO as it was commonly referred to. My mother followed the path of most mothers back then, she did not work until all of us were in fulltime school. Dad often held 2 jobs and at one point had 3 jobs. Mom was the disciplinarian and ran a tight household.

My mom was an avid reader, worked as a school lunchroom lady, and eventually worked for the Palladium Item (Gannett news). Mom loved reading so much that she used to take me to the Morrison Reeves library whenever she went. She even donated money, something we didn’t have a lot of, to the library. My mom was the person in my life that instilled the idea of learning something new, no matter how big or how small, every day. She also encouraged us to enjoy music and the arts. I was a very active and curious boy thanks to my mom. I learned how to swim at 5 and eventually became a lifeguard at our local pool. I played sports – Baseball, football, basketball, and golf. I played the cello in junior high. I learned to draw, and paint from a well-known, local artist, Dr Loar. I also learned to dance both ballet and tap as a very young man!

My dad was the one who taught me how to play golf at the age of 14 and built me my very first set of clubs the following year. I used to play several times a week while in high school and always on Mondays-Wednesdays-Sundays when I became an adult. Why Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday? Well, those were the days that my dad’s group of golfing buddies played. We putted for quarters and played a $6 match every time out. Those old dudes were ruthless about $6! No one ever got rich from those games even though the pots might be $20-$30. However, after everything was paid out, including the skins pot, and side bets the grand total almost always came out to be @$6 won or lost! My dad and I enjoy 27 years as playing partners.

Sadly, both parents are no longer with us. The family joke has always been that when my mother suffered from a brain tumor, and slipped into a coma during the Spring of 2012, she decided to go on Spring break and enjoyed the break from us so much that she stayed! My father joined her 4 years later.

I have 2 brothers and a sister. My oldest brother, Mike grew up to become a doctor. My sister, Donna became a nurse. I became a military man and then a police officer, and my little brother, Tony, went on to work at the local dairy where he has been for the past 33 years!

I am a father, brother, uncle, and husband (we will discuss Cindy later), as well as a grandfather. I have 2 children, Alexis my oldest, and Patrick. Through them I have been blessed with 5 grandsons and a granddaughter. My nieces are Kirsten, Allison (twins), and Megan. My nephews are James, Sean, Kyle, Austin, and Houston.

I could share stories about these people that take days to read but I must move on to the next “Getting to Know Me”

*If you are convinced at this point that I might just be the guy, feel free to donate to the campaign because as you know campaigns cost money! Thank you!
